You do everything that's required of you as far as your car goes. You check your fluids, and everything looks pretty good. Your oil's at the right level. Your battery's fine. Your car is making no noises, and you're all set to go on that long trip.
No, you're not. Why not?
You checked those things, but you didn't follow through with changing the oil. Oil needs to be changed every five thousand miles or so. Some cars need it more frequently, depending on location and driving habits. Some cars can go without. Specifically, if you drive like an Indy race car driver at times, your engine oil is doing double duty as a lubricant. It's cleaning parts inside your engine. Over time, the additives in the oil break down, and even though the oil looks fine, it's not. It might even be clear, but it's old oil, and needs changing.
So, you checked it. Now what? You need to change it.
